A360 temporary closure

Welcome

National Highways plans to improve the A303 past Stonehenge between Amesbury and Berwick Down by creating a new dual carriageway with a tunnel, removing traffic from much of this iconic setting.

The A303 Stonehenge project needs an electricity supply for construction and for the tunnel once built. Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN), working on behalf of National Highways, will be carrying out work along the A360 to provide power. We will be installing high voltage cabling along this route.

To allow the work to be done as safely and as quickly as possible, a section of the A360 will be temporarily closed to the south of the A303 between Longbarrow roundabout and The Avenue roundabout between April and July this year.

During the closure, traffic will be diverted via the A345 and sections of the A303 and A36. Road signs will be in place to direct traffic to alternative routes.

Camp Hill and the Stoford to Woodford Middle road, which crosses the A360, will remain open throughout the works. Temporary weight restrictions will be in place on these roads.

Our progress

Work will continue over the upcoming bank holiday weekend and we expect to begin the second phase of the trenching works, between Church Bottom crossroads and Druids Lodge, from 7 May.

The phase two trenching works are anticipated to take approximately three to four weeks.

The road between Stoford and Woodford will remain open with temporary traffic lights used to manage traffic flow as work moves across the junction.

We will share up-to-date information about the project on this website - visit our FAQs page for more information. You can also sign up to receive email updates.
